James Fields advises and
represents clients in all aspects of complex business and commercial
litigation, with particular emphasis on and experience in contract disputes
and business torts, including civil fraud, and tort claims and disputes
arising out of business and asset sales and acquisition transactions, joint
ventures, stockholder/member/partnership
relations, real property development and commercial leasing. Mr.
Fields is particularly experienced in the litigation and successful
resolution of claims and disputes involving
management agreements, lease agreements,
vendor agreements, contractor agreements, and franchise/franchisee
relations. Mr. Fields also practices in the area of financial services
litigation, routinely defending myriad lender liability claims in State and
Federal Courts.
Mr. Fields also practices
in the area of insurance defense, including particularly the defense of
healthcare providers in medical malpractice actions for serious personal
injury and wrongful death. In this practice area,
Mr. Fields also maintains a significant
law enforcement liability practice, defending law enforcement officers
against claims of negligence, false arrest, assault and battery, excessive
force, other intentional torts, and state and federal constitutional
violations, and against damages claims involving various medical, personal
and psychological injuries, including catastrophic personal injury and
wrongful death. Mr. Fields has been lead trial counsel, or the supervisor
of designated lead trial counsel, in over 200 civil litigation matters
involving law enforcement officers.
Mr. Fields also practices
in the area of employment litigation, defending wrongful termination and
for cause claims, and litigating affirmative and defensive actions,
including requests for emergency and injunctive relief, involving employment
agreements and non-competition agreements.
Mr. Fields practices in
state and federal courts, at both the trial and appellate level, and has
represented clients and litigated cases in many areas of his practice
outside the State of Maryland, including in the District of Columbia,
Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Michigan, Florida, Georgia, California,
and Arizona.
Prior to joining Jones &
Associates, Mr. Fields was an associate at the law firm of Miles &
Stockbridge, P.C. for four years in the Litigation Department of the firm,
from 1991 to 1995. Mr. Fields principal areas of practice were commercial,
banking and business litigation, as well as general insurance defense, and
products liability defense involving claims arising out of power tool
design/manufacture, and toxic torts.
Mr. Fields is a long-time
resident of Baltimore, Maryland, where he received his primary and secondary
education. Mr. Fields is and has been involved in a number of professional
and civic organizations.
